20th Century America                         April 22, 1958    Issue #21

This is another excerpt from the diary of Babe Ruth. It's about one of the most amazing inventions in history.

The newest and craziest thing just happened. Supposedly, today, December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers flew the first plane. It only went up for 12 seconds, but every good thing has to start somewhere. I wish that I could fly on that plane. That would be so amazing. Those men just opened up inventions for centuries to come. We have came so far as a nation. We went from being slaves of Britain to becoming our own nation. The nwe made it all the way to the west coast. Now were are flying. Who knows that else is going to happen. In the future planes might be able to hold more than two people and fly people places as well as going long distances. They might even later have seats that hold more than twenty people. This inventions will open up many new opportunity. I hear that soon they are going to let people fly on the plane. I am going to try that. It may be expensive but since the Red Sox traded me to the Yankees I have a lot more money on my contract. Another important new invention was the Crayola crayon. The first box was made not long ago and I'm very excited. I love to color and draw. I am a very artistic man and it's going to be very useful. When I have children they are going to love this invention. All kids love coloring and to express their self so this is big. Some day there may be many different kinds of coloring but I think we will have to wait until then. I think they will make big crayons, small ones, and make pencils that draw in different color. Our country is going to have a bright future and things like this give open doors for others. Things like making planes and crayons help us out a lot. God has a plan for all of us and when he helps the creator make his invention he opens up a pathway for others to succeed. I think that we'll grow nonstop as a nation no matter what happens or what troubles we go through.
